Greetings! My name is Roy Kachur – Media Technologist, IT Architect, and VR Evangelist. I’ve worked in the information technology field since the 1990’s, and in the media industry since 2014.

In the spring of 2014, a significant business transaction took place. Facebook acquired a startup called Oculus VR, and effectively kick-started (no pun intended) a renewed interest in virtual reality around the world. The Oculus Rift was a new VR headset intended for the average consumer. The first time I tried it was in the fall of 2014, at a VR demo in New York for the movie Interstellar.

I was very impressed. Even with limited interactivity (this was before the Oculus Touch controllers became available), the Interstellar demo got me excited for the potential of VR for the media industry.

I became interested in companies like Jaunt and NextVR, who were working on technology for “cinematic VR” using 360-degree video cameras. The concept of experiencing live-action video in a VR headset was extremely compelling. To me, this was the next best thing to TELEPORTATION.

Imagine the possibilities for news, entertainment, and sports! Imagine Sunday Night Football, or the Super Bowl in virtual reality, where fans could have the best seat in the house without ever leaving their living room! Or the Olympics opening ceremony, with multiple on-field cameras bringing you into the action as it unfolds all around you in 360 degrees. Or with news correspondents around the globe, transporting you on location, on the scene, for world events AS IF YOU WERE ACTUALLY THERE.

Most of these possibilities have already been realized since 2014, and advancements in VR, AR, and MR continue to develop. I want to follow these developments as they happen in the weeks, months, and years ahead. My goal for this website is to take you along with me, every step of the way.
